Okay I finally gave in, being a drummer and all, I thought I might as well do a top 10 drummers post. Actually, list off as many as you want, I frankly think there are too many out there to be just 10. Remember, it's not a competition, it's a matter of personal preference. Site specific works that you found interesting.
1. Abe Cunningham - Deftones (Saturday Night Wrist, White Pony)
2. Danny Carey - Tool (Lateralus, Salival live tracks)
3. Stewart Copeland - The Police/Independent (all works)
4. Morgan Agren - Frederik Thordendal's (Special Defects)
5. John Bonham - Led Zeppelin (all works)
6. Chad Smith - Red Hot Chili Peppers (Blood Sugar Sex Magik)
7. Blake Richardson - Between the Buried and Me (Colors)
8. Martin Lopez - Opeth (Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation)
9. Dave Krusen - Pearl Jam (Ten)
10. Dave Grohl - Nirvana (Nevermind, In Utero)
1. Sean Reinert - Cynic (Focus/Traced In Air), Death (Human)
2. Gene Hoglan - Death (Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic)
3. Peter Wildoer - Darkane (all, but my fave is Layers Of Lies)
4. Aesgir Mickelson - Spiral Architect (A Skeptics Universe), Ihsahn (The Adversary/AngL)
5. Terry Bozzio - Frank Zappa (everything he was on)
6. Thomas Haake - Meshuggah (ObZen/I e.p.)
7. George Kollias - Nile (Ithyphallic)
8. Derek Roddy - Hate Eternal (I, Monarch)
9. Johnny Kelly - Type O Negative (all the albums he was on except the most recent were programmed drums, but he's just solid as hell!)
10. Sean Drover - Megadeth (United Abominations)
11. Martin Axenrot - Opeth (Watershed)
Tough one. I'll keep in Rock/Metal:
1. Neil Peart - RUSH
2. John Bonham - Led Zeppelin
3. Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater
4. Niko McBrain - Iron Maiden
5. Jerry Mercer - April Wine
6. Sean Kinney - Alice In Chains
7. Phil Rudd - AC/DC
8. Charlie Watts - The Rolling Stones
9. Eric Carr - KISS
10. Tommy Lee - Motley Crue
I definitely like Tommy as a showman. When he had that show, about him going back to college, I watched an episode where these college cadet drummers just destroyed him as far as chops go. However, he still is by far one of my favorite drummers.
search youtube for his rollcage video. While he may not have the most amazing chops, he was one of the first butt-rock drummers to stand out and do something different. And I guess I have to agree with Kara, things like that will make your image stick in people's minds for ages. hhhmmm now where did I put that man-thong?
Neil Pert - Rush
Christopher Tsagakis - Rx Bandits (And The Battle Begun... Holy Crap!)
Keith Moon - The Who
John Bonham - Led Zeppelin
Alex Van Halen - Van Halen
Mitch Mitchell - Jimi Hendrix Experience (How did nobody mention him yet?)
